Small Eyes on the Big Stage
By NATHAN LEE, NEW YORK TIMES
Published: September 12, 2008
All year long, all across North America, the bright-eyed actor-directors of the Missoula Children’s Theater disembark from their little red trucks in towns both big (Los Angeles) and small (Somerton, Ariz.) to put on shows.
On Monday they hold auditions with the local children. By Tuesday they’re rehearsing a musical version of a classic story: “Robin Hood,” “The Little Mermaid.” By Friday, they hope, all the kids know their lines, songs and cues, and by Saturday it’s on with the costumes, on with the dress rehearsal and on to the big night: the performance of an hourlong musical that has come together — more or less — in just one week.
And then the group picks up and heads off to tickle the fancy and widen the horizons of the next batch of grinning, goofy peewees (as the littlest ones are called) in, say, Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, Canada.
This is the story of “The Little Red Truck,” a documentary by the filmmaker Rob Whitehair, and if it sounds like the cutest thing in the history of cuteness, that’s because it is. It would take a superhuman capacity for cynicism to resist the radiant optimism of the Missoula Children’s Theater players and the unabashed pep of this joyful portrait. Sure, this sweet little movie isn’t going to change the world, but when those little red trucks roll up, and all those little eyes light up, that’s exactly what happens.
“The Little Red Truck” is rated PG (Parental guidance suggested). It includes very mild discussions of children with domestic and schoolyard troubles.
THE LITTLE RED TRUCK

* A brilliant idea for a documentary, beautifully executed: Director-writer-editor-etc. Rob Whitehair follows some 250 kids, wee to teen, in five cities across the U.S. and Canada as they audition for and star in stage productions spearheaded by the Missoula Children's Theatre, whose patient, boisterous, and demanding directors transform a one-off into a life-altering experience. No surprise that the L.A. kids, staging The Little Mermaid, are the camera-savvy pros with impressive chops. And the ones from faraway Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, Canada, for whom live theater's a rare and magical thing, are the most shy and slightly stunned. But for most, if not all, of the subjects, the opportunities afforded by the MCT are extraordinary—the chance to find themselves by being someone else, with friends and rivals and siblings for whom plays are no longer playtime by film's end. Most of the kids interviewed talk about how they were troubled or in trouble before they got involved in theater. (Some still are—a few of the kids get the boot when they can't play well with others.) Good for kids just beginning to express themselves; even better for their parents. Hey, where's Guffman when you really need him?
